The Mermaid Inn (Rye)
Bowler Crab became the official resident theatre company of The Mermaid Inn in 2017. The Rye based 600 year old inn (known for having Shakespeare’s company visit them in 1597) today hosts Bowler Crab’s performances year round. as our most popular indoor venue.
To date Bowler Crab has brought more than 15 productions to The Mermaid, all in a variety of forms from 3 hour long full productions to 90- minute short showcases, from one-man shows to dining experiences with four course meals!

Shakespeare at The Mermaid
In 2017, BC formed a relationship with The Mermaid Inn as a performance venue, following the discovery that suggests Shakespeare's company, The Chamberlain's Men, visited The Mermaid in 1597.

Journey through one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies as mistaken identity, song, drunken behaviour, unrequited love and a pair of yellow stockings transport you to a world of wonder.
Split by a shipwreck, twins Viola and Sebastian unravel a prank-filled plot like no other as they join some of the Bard’s liveliest characters. Amidst the celebrations of Twelfth Night, Viola falls into a love triangle as Orsino and Olivia become infactuated with her; the problem being that Viola is disguised as her brother! But can all be forgiven when a harmless prank involving a letter and colourful attire inprisons the vengful Malvolio?
Bowler Crab produced Twelfth Night in 2014 and again in 2018. Armed with fresh approaches from over a decade of touring Shakespeare across the UK, Bowler Crab returns to an old favourite as production 34 sets sail in June 2025.
